Photosynthesis
We found out how important the sun is to plants. Plants make their own food and sometimes this is stored in the plant. We breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. Plants breathe in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen.
Enviro Schools "Hey Honey" Unit
During Term 4 the Middle Team did a unit called "Hey Honey".
This unit focused on how bees pollinate plants and the importance of this due to pollination being vital for our food source.

Marton Community Project
When Miss Young came to Read and Feed on a Monday and spoke about our Enviro - Schools topic she talked about two initiatives that happen in Marton (where she lives).
Marton has a community garden where anyone can go and help out or contribute.
Fruit and vegies from this garden go to a wagon that is in the middle of town. People can also leave surplus fruit and vegies on the wagon. Anyone can help themselves to free fruit and vegies from this wagon.
Miss Young put surplus feijoas from her tree on the wagon for other people to enjoy.

Food Idioms
Everyday people use idioms to express themselves. Food idioms are very common. We have looked at 10 idioms that are used in our daily language and discussed what they mean. Some are very tricky to work out and others are easy.
My favourite is "bring home the bacon" - which means to earn money.
In my family I bring home the bacon. I work to get the money!

Food Containers For Storing Food
Food Containers to store food. 1. Look in your lunch box to see how food is stored or wrapped? Show and discuss e.g plastic containers like Tupperware, glad wrap, packaging etc 2. What is the container or wrap doing to the food? 3. What happens when food is left out without being stored or wrapped? Goes soft, stale etc 4. I then show some special purpose containers and we discuss these . If time - can they think of any others that they have at home?
